After more than thirteen years since Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games has finally locked in a release date for the most anticipated sequel in gaming history. GTA 6 is real, it’s coming, and for the first time since the leaks of 2022, we actually have confirmed details instead of speculation to work with.
This guide pulls together everything officially confirmed so far — no rumors, no leaks, just what Rockstar and Take-Two have actually announced.
Release Date & Platforms
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This date came directly from Take-Two’s fiscal year 2026 earnings call, where the company tied its entire FY2027 revenue forecast — $8 to $8.2 billion — to this launch window. That’s about as firm a commitment as a publisher can make.
It’s been a bumpy road to get here. The game was originally expected sometime in Fall 2025, then pushed to May 26, 2026, and delayed a second time to its current November date. Rockstar’s stated reason both times was simple: more time to polish the game to the standard players expect.
There’s no last-gen version — PS4 and Xbox One are skipped entirely. A PC release hasn’t been confirmed either. Going by Rockstar’s own history, GTA 5 arrived on PC roughly a year and a half after its console debut, so PC players should plan for a long wait.
Meet Lucia and Jason
For the first time in mainline GTA history, the story is built entirely around a single romantic criminal partnership — Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a modern Bonnie-and-Clyde duo at the center of everything.
Lucia Caminos
Lucia grew up in Liberty City before ending up in Leonida, where she served time at the Leonida Penitentiary. She gets released early and comes out determined to build a better life the smart way instead of chasing half-formed dreams. She’s a landmark character for the series — the first major female lead in a mainline GTA story with a full voice performance, rather than a silent, optional, or multiplayer-only role.
Jason Duval
Jason is an Army veteran, making him the first confirmed protagonist with a military background in the series. The Army didn’t fix what he was running from, and he ended up doing odd jobs for a small-time drug operation in the Leonida Keys, living rent-free in a property owned by the operation’s boss in exchange for helping out.
Meeting Lucia changes everything for him. A heist that goes wrong pulls the pair into a much bigger criminal conspiracy stretching across the entire state — and unlike GTA V’s three separate character arcs that occasionally crossed paths, Lucia and Jason’s stories are designed to be experienced together, as two sides of the same relationship.
Welcome to Leonida
The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s take on modern Florida, anchored by a rebuilt, present-day version of Vice City. Confirmed details put the map at roughly twice the size of GTA V’s, spread across six distinct biomes — from neon-soaked city streets to swampland and beach towns — with more than 700 interiors players can actually walk into.
Tonally, Rockstar is leaning hard into extremely-online, present-day Florida — viral social media clips, influencer culture, and the kind of chaotic local news energy that’s become an internet genre of its own. It’s the same fictional geography that gave us the original Vice City in 2002, rebuilt for a very different era.
What’s New in Gameplay
Rockstar has confirmed several gameplay systems built specifically around having two connected protagonists instead of a rotating trio:
- Near-instant character switching — when Lucia and Jason are together, swapping between them is seamless, a big step up from GTA V’s slower zoom-out transitions.
- Shared inventory — no more unlimited personal arsenals. Heavier weapons and gear get physically passed between the two, adding a tactical layer to heists.
- Intimidation mechanics — one character can control a crowd or watch the exits while the other handles the technical side of a robbery.
- Deeper stealth options, including crawling and better use of cover than GTA V offered.
- More dynamic vehicle combat, including full 360-degree aiming while leaning out of a moving car.
Rockstar has also described heists as moving away from rigid, fully scripted setups toward something more reactive — early details point to robberies that can play out differently depending on how you approach them.
The Road to November 19
The first trailer leaked online in late 2023 shortly before its planned reveal — still considered one of the biggest leaks in gaming history — and was released properly by Rockstar days later to a massive reception.
A second trailer followed in 2025, arriving alongside the news of the game’s first delay. It gave fans their first real look at Lucia, Jason, and the world of Leonida in motion, and it remains one of the most-watched game trailers ever released.
As of now, Rockstar hasn’t dropped a third trailer, but with pre-orders live and a firm release date on the calendar, most expect the marketing campaign to ramp up significantly as launch approaches.
What About GTA Online?
One detail worth flagging for longtime fans: Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 is primarily a single-player experience at launch. Since GTA Online has been a massive, ongoing revenue driver for GTA V over the past decade, this naturally raises questions about what comes next for online play. Rockstar hasn’t shared a timeline for a GTA 6 online mode yet, making this one of the bigger open questions heading into release.
Price & Pre-Orders
GTA 6 is confirmed at $79.99 for the standard edition — above the traditional $70 tier, but in line with where AAA console pricing has been trending. Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, alongside the reveal of the official box art. Digital pre-load begins November 12, 2026, a full week before launch, so digital buyers can have the game ready to go the moment it unlocks.
JoystickVerse Take
Two delays would normally worry me, but everything Rockstar has confirmed so far suggests they're using the extra time well. A genuinely emotional dual-protagonist story, a map twice the size of GTA V, and gameplay systems built specifically around Lucia and Jason's partnership rather than bolted on — this isn't just 'GTA V but bigger.' November 19 is going to be one of the biggest days gaming has seen in over a decade, and we'll be covering every update between now and launch.
